GreenBoma Landscaping
Professional outdoor and garden lighting design and installation in Nairobi. Transform your garden after dark with path lights, feature uplights, solar lighting, and smart LED systems. Free lighting design consultation from Green Boma.
A well-lit garden is a garden you enjoy for twice as many hours. Garden lighting transforms outdoor spaces at dusk — highlighting architectural planting, illuminating pathways for safety, creating atmospheric zones for outdoor dining, and adding a layer of security. At Green Boma, we design and install professional outdoor lighting systems integrated into your landscape — not bolted on as an afterthought.
Low-level bollard lights, recessed ground lights, and step lights. Warm white (2700-3000K) for inviting, natural character.
Directional spotlights at the base of trees, structural planting, walls, and architectural features. Adjustable ground spikes repositionable as the garden matures.
High-quality solar path lights, spotlights, and string lights — no electrical cabling. Ideal for Nairobi's consistent sunshine.
Smartphone-controlled zones, scheduling, dimming, scene creation, and security automation — manageable remotely when travelling.
Motion-activated floodlights, perimeter wall lights, and gate entry lighting integrated with your overall landscape scheme.
Submersible LED lights and directional spotlights for swimming pools, ponds, fountains, and water walls.
IP65-rated task and ambient lighting for outdoor kitchens, BBQ areas, pergolas, and terrace dining.
Effective garden lighting design begins with understanding the space as it looks after dark — not just in daylight. We visit your property at or around dusk to observe existing light conditions, identify which garden elements deserve highlighting, understand your security priorities, and discuss the atmosphere you want to create. This dusk consultation is provided free of charge for every installation project and is what separates a genuinely designed lighting scheme from a random collection of lights.
All Green Boma lighting installations use LED technology as standard. LED fixtures use 70-80% less electricity than equivalent halogen or incandescent fittings, and their rated lifespan of 30,000-50,000 hours means minimal bulb replacement over many years of operation. LED's compatibility with dimmer systems also allows complete control of light level, enabling you to create different atmospheres for different occasions in the same garden.
Solar garden lighting is particularly effective in Nairobi, where abundant sunshine throughout most of the year provides reliable daily charging. High-quality lithium battery solar fixtures provide 8-12 hours of operation from a full day's charge, activating automatically at dusk and switching off at dawn. Solar fixtures eliminate the need for cable trenching in areas where running mains power would be costly or disruptive to established gardens.
Our smart garden lighting systems connect to standard smart home platforms and are controllable from any smartphone or tablet, from anywhere in the world. Set pathways to illuminate automatically at sunset. Schedule security lights to simulate occupancy when the house is empty. Create different lighting scenes — relaxed ambient for dining, full brightness for entertaining, dim romantic for evening relaxation — all switchable with a single tap.
The difference between amateur and professional garden lighting is integration. When lighting is designed at the same time as the landscape, fixtures are positioned to illuminate specific plants at their most dramatic angle, cables are routed before lawns and beds are established, and conduits are laid before paving is installed. This integrated approach eliminates the surface-mounted cabling and poorly positioned fittings that characterise retrofit lighting in established gardens.
All outdoor lighting fixtures we specify carry a minimum IP65 weather protection rating — meaning they are sealed against dust ingress and protected against direct water jets from any direction. Underground cable connections are made in IP67-rated waterproof junction boxes. In-ground fixtures are installed in sealed stainless steel housings. This level of weather protection is essential in Nairobi where tropical downpours can be sudden and intense.
Security lighting deters intruders, illuminates hazards, and creates the impression of an occupied, actively managed property. Our security installations use passive infrared (PIR) motion sensors with adjustable detection range and sensitivity, combined with smart controls that allow you to receive mobile notifications when motion is detected and to override lighting remotely from anywhere. Security lights can be integrated with smart home security systems and CCTV cameras
Illuminating water at night creates some of the most dramatic effects available in landscape lighting. Submersible LED lights within a pool or pond glow with an ethereal quality that transforms the entire garden's nighttime character. Spotlights directed across the surface of a waterfall or cascade create moving light reflections on surrounding walls. We design water lighting as part of the integrated lighting scheme — not as a separate feature added to an otherwise dark pool.
Our lighting designer visits your property at or around dusk and walks through the garden with you, discussing which elements you want to highlight (specimen trees, architectural features, water, entertaining areas), your security priorities, and your overall atmosphere goals. We observe the existing natural light conditions, identify potential light pollution issues, and advise on the most effective approach for your specific garden and lifestyle.
Following the site visit, we produce a lighting design specifying every fixture's position, type, wattage, and beam angle, along with the complete cable routing plan showing how power will be distributed from the supply point to every fixture. This design document ensures the installation is planned efficiently before any groundwork begins — minimising disruption to established planting and lawns.
You receive a clear, itemised quote listing every fixture by type, brand, and specification, along with all cable, conduit, junction boxes, transformers, controllers, and sensors — plus all groundwork and labour. We include links to product data sheets so you can review exactly what will be installed. There are no generic line items or 'materials allowances' that mask the true cost of the installation.
Mains and low-voltage cables are run in protective conduit, routed to minimise disruption to existing planting and lawn areas. Narrow trenching tools limit the width of cable trenches in lawn areas. Conduit is run neatly along wall bases or fence lines where surface routing is unavoidable. All turf and planting areas are reinstated carefully after cable laying — the goal is for the garden to look undisturbed after groundwork is complete.
Every fixture is installed precisely as specified in the design. Uplighting spikes are positioned at the correct distance and angle from the target plant or feature. Bollard lights are set at the correct height relative to path level. In-ground fixtures are set flush with the lawn surface. Surface-mounted wall lights are fixed at the specified height and directed to the designed angle. Every installation is checked against the design drawing before the circuit is energised.
All electrical connections — at the supply point, at junction boxes, and at fixture terminals — are made by a qualified electrician to current electrical installation standards. Every circuit is tested for correct polarity, earth continuity, and insulation resistance before being energised. Outdoor circuits are protected by a residual current device (RCD) at the supply point. All electrical work is documented and certifiable on request.
Where smart lighting systems are installed, our technician programs the controller with your preferred default schedules — automatic activation at sunset, deactivation at a chosen time, and any pre-configured scenes for entertaining or security purposes. The mobile app is installed on your smartphone, the system is paired and tested, and we demonstrate full operation of all features before leaving site
The most important quality check in garden lighting is done after dark, not in daylight. We schedule a final evening walkthrough with the client at dusk, viewing the garden with all lighting active. We adjust fixture angles where beam direction needs refinement, modify smart system brightness levels if required, and confirm the overall scheme creates the atmosphere we designed for. Only once the client is satisfied do we issue the final handover documentation.
